Devota's plan
Devota Damiano Marko envisioned the life she wanted to lead: she would be prosperous, able to care for her son, respected in the community. She wanted this life so bad she could taste it. And then in 2015, she heard about Food For His Children.
This could be the bridge to my new life, she thought.
Despite resistance from her husband and mother-in-law, Devota applied to the program. Upon her acceptance, she created a fool-proof plan. During the night, she cooked meals and did household chores so she could attend agriculture trainings and project meetings throughout the day.
The day she became a goat farmer, she saw herself as crossing over to that new life. Just as she was beginning to feel like her goals were coming to fruition, tragedy struck. The goat she had been given got sick and passed away.
But, she remembered Isaiah 41:13: “For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, ‘Do not fear; I will help you.’”
Miraculously, before the goat died, she gave birth to another female. That doe is now thriving and even has a kid of her own.
Devota sells goat milk to support her son in university. She is valued by her family. She is respected by her community.
And her mother-in-law and husband who were so opposed to her taking steps to better her life couldn’t be happier. They now understand the benefit of Food For His Children and see how lives are being transformed.
